On March 11, 2011, this 9th grade student was awarded a bronze medal in a citywide essay contest for the Optimist Club of Lincoln Heights.

The essay contest topic was: How Education is Key To A Successful Future; Milagros wrote: "I know it can be hard and even stressful sometimes, being just another kid growing up in the "hood"... you have to pull through, be strong. ... your only way out, is through school, and getting a good education."

This young lady is no stranger to struggle but she is a shinning star here at Avance, she recently received a scholarship to attend a school of medicine this summer as part of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine.
